As many of you may have noticed there has been a change to the
Children’s Liturgy program in the last few months. The biggest change
to the program has been the removal of the crafts. This has been changed
to facilitate the “celebration of the liturgy of the word.” This document
was released by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. It was
developed to help the liturgy program go back to our liturgical roots as a
celebration of the liturgy of the word, rather than a Sunday school. As
the congregation, we don’t come to church to go to school with pens and
papers. We come to be inspired and to grow in our faith through the
Celebration of the Word.
The new program is based on the liturgy celebration we participate
in upstairs. The program is designed for young children in that they
celebrate, sing, and pray to Jesus on their level. This program helps open
the children’s mind to develop community with one another through
spontaneous prayer and song. It has been very exciting for me to see the
new program being used and how receptive the children are to
participate
The children participating will be from age four to grade one. Ages
three and under are too young to understand the program and are best
accompanied by a parent upstairs. The grade two’s are requested by the
bishop to stay upstairs because they are going through sacramental prep
and are old enough to understand the liturgy of the word with the adults.
Some of you may be wondering where the children fit in that are too old
for children’s Liturgy, so starting at grade three the youth group now has
a program called Kids for Christ.
